As a new parent to my 4-month-old son, Teo, I’m discovering the wonders of sharing music with him every day. With my background as a Doctor of Music Arts, I know how powerful music can be in shaping our emotions and even in fostering early development. But now, I’m experiencing it from a completely new angle—through the curious eyes (and ears!) of my little one. So, let me share a few ways I’ve created a musical environment at home that brings joy to both Teo and me.
1. Setting Up a Musical Corner
In our living room, I’ve put together a small musical corner where Teo and I can explore sound together. It’s nothing elaborate—just a colorful rug, a few simple instruments like small maracas, a xylophone, and a tambourine. Sometimes we add fun household items like a wooden spoon and a bowl, which Teo loves to bang on. He’s starting to recognize the sounds these objects make, and watching his face light up at each new discovery is the best part of my day.
2. Making Music Part of Our Daily Routine
For Teo, music isn’t just a momentary experience—it’s becoming a part of his day-to-day life. Whether I’m singing softly to him while changing his diaper or tapping a gentle rhythm as I feed him, these moments build an emotional connection and a sense of security for him. And for me, it’s a way to express care and comfort when words don’t always feel enough.
3. Playing Live Music Together
I’ve always believed that live music holds a special power, and I’ve found that to be especially true with Teo. Although he’s too young to understand words, my humming, singing, or even just tapping rhythms instantly grabs his attention. I might not be performing a full-scale concert, but in Teo’s eyes, my simple melodies seem to work magic. Hearing my voice, watching my hands move—it all helps build our bond in a very meaningful way.
4. Incorporating Movement with the Music
Teo is still learning about his body, and he loves movement. When I play a gentle waltz or sing a lullaby, we often sway together or I’ll clap his tiny hands to the rhythm. His reactions tell me that he’s not just hearing the music but feeling it, too. And for a few minutes, we get to share this little dance that’s just ours.
5. Curating a Special Playlist for Teo
Like many new parents, I’ve curated a playlist just for Teo. It includes gentle classical pieces, soft folk tunes, and even a few tracks with rhythmic beats that catch his attention. I’ve noticed which sounds captivate him and how he calms down or gets excited by certain instruments. It’s an ongoing discovery for both of us, and I love watching him respond in his unique way.
6. Exploring Different Musical Textures
In my research and experience, I’ve learned that babies are fascinated by novelty, and I see this firsthand with Teo. He perks up at the sound of a clarinet, or when I crinkle a piece of paper. I try to introduce him to new sounds whenever possible, making sure that each week offers something new for his little ears to explore.
7. Encouraging Exploration and Improvisation
Although Teo is still quite young, I’m letting him explore sound and try his hand at making noise with whatever safe objects are within his reach. His attempts might not be a performance yet, but each little tap or shake feels like the beginning of his journey in exploring the world of music. I can see the wheels turning in his mind, and I’m excited to see where this path leads.
8. Attending Live Baby Concerts
Creating a musical environment at home has been such a joy for us, but I also see the value in taking Teo to live baby concerts like those offered by Artysh Lab. It’s not only a chance for him to experience music beyond our home, but for me, it’s a reminder of how communal and shared the joy of music really is.
The Power of Music in Teo’s Life
Creating a baby-friendly musical environment doesn’t require expensive instruments or a professional setup. It’s all about finding moments to connect, inspire curiosity, and share joy through music. For Teo and me, music has become a bridge that helps us communicate, bond, and discover the world together. And as a musician, seeing my son light up at a melody or react to a beat is a beautiful reminder of why I fell in love with music in the first place.
So, here’s to making music a part of your baby’s life—no matter what your background is. All it takes is a little creativity, intention, and a willingness to play.
